Chairman, Obeetee

Rudra Chatterjee is the chairman of Obeetee and managing director of Luxmi Tea. Based in Kolkata, he grows tea in renowned estates in Rwanda, Darjeeling and Assam. Established in 1859, Makaibari, the group’s oldest estate, was the world’s first garden to be certified for trade and as a fully organic tea garden, and among the first few to be awarded a fair-trade certification. Chatterjee also chairs the hand-knotted rug maker Obeetee, founded in 1920, which trains weavers, including 5,000 women. Chatterjee holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and a Master’s in the History of Design from the University of Oxford. His work connects land, craft, community and design.
